Hey Tom,

I'd hesitate on just asking a train conductor or tour guide for something so vague, but it often works. In general, I set out to go for something on the beaten path, discover another attraction in the process, and set out again. For example, I was living in Kagoshima and knew there were islands south of me accessible by ferry; I had no clue what their names were, what features they boasted, and how best to reach them. So I simply picked the closest one, Ioujima, and made a weekend of it. On the ferry, I talked to some people who had good experiences in nearby Tanegashima... and so I bounced from island to island to island.

Not everywhere you travel has to be virgin territory; see where it takes you, and if it calls you back.

Hi, I've been reading your blog for a long time and now that I'm in Japan, I really want to know how you find out about all these wonderful opportunities and places to go. Where do you find the information to go to these places? Do you just hop on a train and say you want to go to some small island? Any info would be greatly appreciated so I can start to make some memories like yours!

Thanks!
